Description

The Latter-day Saints established missions among the Indians in an effort to help them. They tried to teach them farming. Many Indians were baptized. In an effort to combat the slave trade among the Indians, the Saints purchased many of their captives and took them into their own families. Notwithstanding there was war and conflict, the policy of Brigham Young was always for peace and conciliation. His saying was “it is cheaper to feed the Indians than to fight them.” Accordingly, the Saints were asked to contribute to the support of the Indians. White men’s diseases would kill 90-95% of the Indian population of Utah.
