The initial reactions of the Saints when the call came to muster the Mormon Battalion was less than favorable. It was hard for the men of the Battalion to leave their families behind. The Army took five hundred of the Church’s best men. President Young supported the Battalion and promised to care for the families left behind. The soldiers sent back $5800 for the support of their families. Most of that was donated by the families to the Church for the support of all. For the families of the Battalion soldiers, the journey west was one hardship after another.
