Description
The Latter-day Saints first came to Independence, Jackson County, Missouri in early 1831. By July of that year, a revelation had been received designating Independence as the “center place.” The land was subsequently dedicated by Sidney Rigdon, and Joseph Smith had dedicated a site for the temple. It was Zion, the place of the New Jerusalem, a land of peace, a city of refuge, a place of safety, where people would gather out of every nation in preparation for the Lord’s second coming. The gathering to Zion was to be done in order and when that order was violated peace in Zion was lost.
