July 20, 1833, Mobs attacked the home of William W. Phelps, scattered his family, and destroyed his printing operation. They then tarred and feathered Bishop Edward Partridge and Charles Allen. Three days later they returned in even greater numbers demanding that the Mormon leaders sign an agreement to leave the county. They were forced to sign a memorandum of agreement that the leadership would be gone by January 1, 1834, and the rest of the saints the following spring. What were they to do now? This was Zion. They couldn’t just leave. They had to get word to the Prophet Joseph Smith 900 miles away in Kirtland. This is the story of the saints expulsion from Jackson County Missouri
