Joseph Smith Sr. and Lucy Mack Smith were married January 24, 1796 at Tunbridge Vermont. They began their life together with a $1000 wedding present and part ownership of a “handsome” farm. For six years they remained in Tunbridge, farming. Their first son died in childbirth, then came Alvin, and in February 1800, Hyrum was born. Farm prices were up and things were looking prosperous. Then Joseph and Lucy rented their home and farm, moved to Randolph, Vermont to open a store.
