The Martyrdom of Joseph Smith - Special Downloadable Bundle

$8.99

As early as March 1829, there were intimations that Joseph Smith would give his life for his testimony. He was admonished by revelation to “be firm in keeping the commandments…and if ye do this, behold I grant unto you eternal life, even if you should be slain.” (DC 5:22) Joseph Smith’s life seemed lived in the shadow of martyrdom. In Nauvoo in the Spring of 1844, Joseph spoke more frequently of his impending death. Wilford Woodruff recorded him saying this, “I understand my mission and business. God Almighty is my shield.  And what can man do if God is my friend. I shall not be sacrificed until my time comes. Then I shall be offered freely. Despite the ominous forebodings, Joseph Smith was not morbid, sullen, or fatalistic. He loved life and wanted to live. This is the story of the last days of Joseph Smith the Prophet.

This special bundle includes both audio and video files of 3 episodes from The History of the Saints’  TV show.

Season 7 Show 20 The Martyrdom of Joseph Smith the Prophet

The winter and spring of 1843–44 was a difficult time in Nauvoo. The enemies of Joseph Smith and the saints were closing in and gaining in power. Joseph knew his time was at hand, that he would not live to see 40. Knowing this, the Prophet met frequently with members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles to instruct them and to give them the keys necessary to carry on. It was in such a meeting in March 1844 that the Prophet charged the Twelve with their priorities to govern the Church after his death, explaining that he had conferred upon them all the ordinances, authority, and keys necessary to do so. “I roll the burden and responsibility of leading this church off from my shoulders on to yours. Now, round up your shoulders and stand under it like men; for the Lord is going to let me rest awhile.”
