In 1846, the United States Government called on Brigham Young and the Latter-day Saints, who were temporarily gathered at the Missouri River making preparations to cross the Plains to the Rocky Mountains. They wanted 500 men to join the army and march to California in the war with Mexico. The request was surprisingly granted and the men and women volunteered for what would be one of the longest infantry marches in army history–and that from the only military battalion ever formed on the basis of religion. It is a remarkable story of faith, courage, and sacrifice.
